Biographical Summary and Sample Introduction
Stretch Dunn served 26 years as a soldier in America’s Army before joining BE&K in 1992. Through Dyson Leadership Institute, he teaches seminars and courses such as The West Way of Leadership and Organizational Competence and Chemistry. Stretch’s servant leadership also includes serving on educational related boards, including the Personal Leadership Association, the Norton Advisory Board at Birmingham-Southern College, Alabama Council on Economic Education, and the United States Military Academy Class Board.
He began his post high school education as a Mechanical Engineer at Duke University then graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from The United States Military Academy at West Point in 1966. His post-graduate education includes a Masters degree in Engineering from the University of Illinois, and post-graduate studies at Stanford, the Army War College and the Center for Creative Leadership.
His breadth of leadership experience includes commanding 200 troops in an infantry division in Vietnam to leading 3,000 employees in an Army Corps of Engineers District in the Southeast United States. Stretch was the chief engineer for the Department of Defense serving U.S. Ambassadors in 19 Latin American countries. He has extensive experience in natural disaster recovery, construction management of domestic and overseas projects and dealing with congressional leaders, city officials, the media and foreign government authorities. He was the co-inventor of a simulation used throughout the Army for training in battlefield tactics. Stretch is credited with starting the partnering concept in the Federal Government on the highly successful $160 MM Large Rocket Test Facility project at the Arnold Engineering Center, and he successfully negotiated one of the government’s largest Alternate Disputes Resolution cases. Prior to his current position, he served as Manager of Operations for the BE&K-Kvaerner joint venture with DuPont.
Most recently with BE&K, he heads a new strategic initiative to further diversify BE&K by moving into the Federal Government market. In that capacity, he works to transfer the best of the lessons learned from alliances with several world class private sector clients to light and heavy industrial engineering services for the Federal Government. He also manages the BE&K alliance relationship with Independent Projects Analysis (IPA), an international organization which benchmarks performance on large and small capital projects in several industry sectors.
